Women’s Day: Age-Defying Style

Mid-Length
with face-framing layers
How it Takes Years Off:
“On most women over 40,  long hair that’s all one length tends to drag the face down, partly because hair thins as we age,” says Jennifer Lawrence, senior hairstylist at the Louis Licari Salon in New York City.  ”A mid-length style with strategically cut layers softens and frames the face, and is more sophisticated and sexy.” Jet Rhys, stylist and owner of Jet Rhys Hair Salons in San Diego, says, “This is the perfect length for almost any face shape or hair texture.”
What to Ask For:
A mid-length bob (no longer than the collarbone) with some longer layers hitting at the cheekbone or jawline.
Style Tip:
Twist damp hair into a loose knot, let it dry, undo the knot and let hair fall into soft, natural waves.  The movement of layers will distract people from things like crow’s feet.

Bangs
How it Takes Years Off:
“Bangs are better than Botox,”jokes Rhys. “They add youthfulness to your face, hide fine lines on your forehead, play up your eyes, draw attention to your cheekbones and give any old hairstyle a new look.” Even if you have curly hair, adds Lawrence, your can easily blow-dry a front section to make it look smooth.
What to Ask For:
Have your stylist point-cut hangs just below your brow to create a chunkier texture; avoid a heavy Cleopatra bang that’s cut straight across.  ”A longer fringe cut at a slight angle, swept over to one eye, gives a nice symmetry and softness to the face,” says Rhys.

Celebrity Hairstyles: Flatter Yourself!

Jet Rhys offers some suggestions on which cuts flatter different facial shapes.

The Heart face looks great in a swingy collarbone-length cut with long layers and soft, side-swept bangs that hit the eyebrows.

The Square face is accentuated by cuts and bangs that are too blunt or angular.  Opt for above-the-shoulder layers with wispy fringe and face-hugging pieces.

The Round face looks best in bobs that fall just below the chin and layers that kick off the face.  To be avoided: Very short, choppy cuts without hair around the face.

The Diamond face is complemented by face-framing layers and softly rounded, blended bangs.  Stay away from longer hair, which closes the face in with the narrow forehead.

The Oblong face needs layers.  Try a long look styled off the face using a round brush for width.  Strong bobs can make the face look longer if they’re too short.

Give your hair a boost

Hair naturally thins as you get older, so anything you can do to counteract that process will help you stay gorgeous.  Volumizing shampoos are great, but the most effective (and quickest) youth  boost comes courtesy of a volumizing spray gel, like Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Spray Gel Root Lifter (below, $4; drugstores). “These sprays are like a collagen injection for your hair,” says Jet Rhys, owner of Jet Rhys Salon in San Diego.  They key, Rhys notes, is not to spray it all over your crown but to get it onto the underside of your hair, near the roots.

Martha Stewart Living: Tame Supercharged Tresses

“Hair static is caused by dryness,” says fashion hairstylist Jet Rhys. She recommends using L’Oreal Source de Richesse shampoo and conditioner ($23 and $33, lorealprofessionnel.com), which fight free radicals that cause static. Finish with a smoothing product: Davines Momo Cream ($21, davines.com)” adds moisture without weighing hair down,” Rhys says.

-Dramatic Color
You can do easy root touch-ups at home, but “when you’re making a big
shade change, like brunette to blonde, there’s no substitute for the salon,” says Aura Friedman, a Wella colorist who routinely helps M.I.A switch shaders

-Cuts
Investing in a great haircut that grows out without losing its shape can mean less time and money spent on products and maintenance. Keep in mind that”regular trims are imperative for women with finer hair to prevent split ends and limp strands,” says San Diego salon owner Jet Rhys

-Highlights and Lowlights Strategically placed color will grow in
better, meaning fewer touch-ups. ‚”For fall, I prefer to paint deeper tones on the underside of hair so that it looks natural as it grows out,‚” says Friedman. ‚” if you love a celebrity’s hair in a photo, only a professional colorist will know where to apply highlights and lowlights. You can’t get that from a box.”

“This flat iron’s curved edges help to create movement in the hair, reflecting light and enhancing faded ends.”

“Natural bristles make hair frizzier, so synthetic is best.”

“When hair is still wet, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle, working up from the tips.”

Tame Frizz
Whether your hair is straight or curly, take the other F word out of your A.M. styling session.

Tweak your technique
After you shower don’t towel dry hair or wrap it in a towel on top of your head, says Ana Paula Cota, a senior stylist at Devachan Salon in NYC. ‚ÄúBoth rough up the cuticle, leading to frizz before hair‚Äôs even dry.‚Äù Squeeze out water with an old T-shirt. ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs softer and gentler.‚Äù
For sleek strands, blow-dry with a boar-bristle brush-it’s a must. “Boar bristles are natural oils from root to tip,” says Mark Garrison, owner of the Mark Garrison Salon in NYC. “They make hair shinier and cut down on frizz even if you don’t use styling products.”

Test-drive these cool tips
After you’ve finished styling, dip a clean makeup brush into translucent face powder; blow off excess, then dust it along your hairline and roots at the top of your head, says Jet Rhys, a hairstylist in San Diego. “ You give hair natural lift without creating more flyaways, which you get from flipping hair upside down to create volume.”
To get rid of flyaways, you need a brush that grabs stubborn strands-and the smaller, the better, like a toothbrush. Short bristles can scoop up small sections of hair, which is critical when fixing cowlicks and frizz as well as getting bangs to lie right, Rhys says.
